Advancements made in imaging solutions have greatly helped the medical field. Before the advent of MRI things were not this easy for health care professionals. With MRI they are able to detect illness and symptoms earlier and this has helped in greatly reducing the mortality rates. Today a physician prescribes an MRI as he can get clearer picture of the internal organs and he proceeds with treatment. It is painless and non-invasive. Patients suffering from certain injuries are advised MRI scans so that the damage caused can be ascertained easily. Patients who have pacemakers and some metal implants cannot go for MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnetism, radio waves and a computer to give out images of the body structures. It is a tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet. The MRI image resolution is quite detailed and it is preferred as it can detect tiny changes inside the human body. Why The Need For FMRI?
This is used when other testing fails to provide sufficient information. There are no radiation effects with this scan. FMRI scans are the same as MRI scans while MRI is used to get images of anatomical structures FMRI is used to get images of metabolic function. FMRI applications are mainly used to detect abnormalities within the brain and this is the only imaging available for such conditions. Other imaging techniques fail and this measures the small changes in blood flow that occur with brain activity. It takes about 2 hours to take a scan. Physicians advise patients to go for this scan when they have a stroke or in the case of brain tumours. By detecting changes in blood flow, they are able to evaluate the patient’s condition and prescribe better treatment procedures. This is used in diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Advantages Of FMRI
How Is It Done? A patient is asked to perform specific tasks so that there is increase in the flow of oxygen rich blood flow to a certain part of a brain. They are asked to tap their thumbs, answer questions, read a book, etc. Brain mapping is essential before a brain surgery and doctors rely on images of FMRI. It is also used by psychologists, neurologists, radiologists and oncologists. It has provided new insights into how memories are formed, association with pain and how learning happens. Applications of FMRI have benefitted the medical world and researchers are using this to further their research.
