This material is made of many other chemical ingredients other than cerium dioxide; like silicon oxide, calcium oxide, Praseodymium oxide, aluminum oxide, and Lanthanum oxide.
Accurate procedure of using cerium oxide polishing powder Initially, the glass object should be made ready before applying cerium oxide polishing powder. So it is essential to clean its surfaces thoroughly, to remove all dust and dirt particles. Usually, a clean piece of soft cloth or duster is needed to wipe off the glass surface. However, care should be taken to clean all the corners of that surface so that no foreign particle is left there. A thick colloidal paste should be made of this powder, by adding a required amount of water to it. Cerium dioxide acts as a catalyst to oxidize all the water molecules into H3O, which will complete the polishing procedure. Hence, the amount of water added to form this paste should be appropriate to utilize the entire chemical for oxidation. Now, a soft polishing pad of suitable thickness is needed for polishing the glass item. This pad is dipped into the cerium oxide paste and then moved vertically or horizontally over the glass surface, to spread this creamy paste over the entire area. If only a limited part of an object needs to be polished, it is best to mark that area with a dark-colored crayon. This pad can be mounted on an electrical drill to make the polish faster, which is preferred in industrial matters. Generally, glass is made of sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and silicon dioxide. As H3O of cerium oxide paste comes in contact with the glass surface, it instantly starts reacting with the sodium ions while the cerium oxide directly reacts with the silicate radicals. Hence, the cerium oxide polishing material is capable of removing even the toughest stains from a glass surface. Lastly, this slurry paste of cerium oxide should be wiped off from the glass surface after leaving it there for a few minutes. A clean and dry cloth is needed for this purpose, to clear this paste from the glass object, leaving it with a shiny and new look. Various other applications of cerium oxide polishing material However, cerium oxide is not only useful for polishing glass items, but it has other uses as well. This chemical is added to the fuel tank of vehicles, due to its capability of oxidizing carbon monoxide and reducing nitrogen oxide, thus contributing to lowering the degree of air pollution. Moreover, cerium oxide polishing powder can filter the harmful infrared rays, for which it is needed in Physics labs as well. Now, incandescent gas light mantle is also manufactured with cerium oxide polishing dust, instead of Thorium oxide powder.
